United Kingdom Witnesses Surge in Internet Crime

Over the last few years, cybercrime has evolved both in terms of purpose and sophistication. Organized cybercrime networks are spread across the world. As users have become wary of regular spam and phishing emails, offenders are leveraging technology to devise complex crime mechanisms. The flood of information on the Internet has facilitated criminals to launch target-based attacks and use social engineering techniques to deceive Internet users. United Kingdom (UK) has also witnessed rise in cybercrime incidents. According to a recent report by Mail Online, number of cybercrime victims is going to exceed those who are affected by conventional crime over the next year. The report reveals that UK has witnessed around eighty percent increase in cybercrime during the past six months. Information security has become a critical issue for Internet users. Data breach is a cause for concern as criminals use the stolen information for misrepresentation and identity theft.

People using Wi-fi systems are no less vulnerable to threats and are likely to be targeted by cybercriminals. Offenders lure Internet users to download malicious files loaded with malware and spying software by placing links on websites or sending specially crafted e-mails. When unwary users click on the links or download files out of curiosity, malicious codes get executed on their computer systems. Criminals may gain unauthorized and remote access to computer systems through such attacks. The malicious software may extract data in files and folders and send them to a remote attacker. Information security professionals caution users against more sophisticated malware attacks in the near future. The recent attack through ‘Stuxnet Malware’ illustrates the severity of threats in the cyber space.

Regular software updates, installation of new version of operating systems and applications, and use of anti-malware solutions may help Internet users to avoid cybercrime. Businesses must conduct regular web application tests and evaluate the weaknesses in IT security infrastructure through ethical hacking to avoid exploitation of vulnerabilities by cybercriminals.
